I Heard the Owl Call My Name, by Margaret Craven

Reviewed by Ryan Horvath, 13, Pennington, NJ

This story tells the life and culture of the remote Pacific Northwest village of Kingcome, and the Native American group that lives there. Here because of the rich nature around them, hunting and fishing remain the primary sources of food. But now the old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaced by modern housing and alcoholism. Mark Brian, the young vicar from down river, takes the reader on a journey of discovery, and into the culture of this Native American group.

This is one of the few books that I have read that describes in detail, the lives and culture of Native American groups living in the Pacific Northwest. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about Pacific Northwestern Native Americans.
