In Snowballs, a story is told of items that were saved up in order to create the perfect snow family when the time came. After Ehlert observed and analyzed each member of the snow family, the temperature increased and the family melted away. The book has very creative illustrations, using things to decorate the snow family that a child could actually use including coffee beans, popcorn, and many household items. The backgrounds go from a very dim grey when it is snowing to bright orange to represent the melting sun. At the end of the book there are two educational sections: "good stuff" and "snow info." The "good stuff" pictures the items used to contruct the family. The "snow info" section is educational telling the stages snow goes through. However, the younger audience may lose interest in this section. The book targets children ages 3-7, because the bright colors would attract younger children whose parents may read to them.
