Backup

Gabe Phillips, 14, Southside, AL

A sound catches the ear
Takes the brain makes it hear
Destiny, impressions, put on emotions
Stimulates the heart
Falls in love
With a dream
That never goes away
Now you think you've got it
Now you think it's made
Oh, you love that dream hope it'll never fade
Helplessly your hands slam by force on the strings
Hopeful the light at the end of the tunnel it gleams
Happy conceited you seem to think you're big
Only unaware your own grave you dig
Three other pieces fall together with ease
Working together only your pleasure to please
Mysteriously you hypnotize you with your only dream
Two trees unwillingly grew past its leaves
Congratulations you've made it out of the garage
Proud that your dream no longer seems a mirage
Growing and growing you feel you're almost at the top
One morning you're playing when suddenly you stop
"Where am I, where did I go
What if I don't make it I want to know
Where will my bones rest where will my memories blow"
Frightened you're paralyzed with your own vision you've impaired
Gray hair slumped over a bum on the street within rags
Looking behind you to see if your memory is still there
Backup was never a thought in your dimly loose head
A dream over ran you living in a shack and dieing in bed

Gabe Phillips is in 9th grade at Southside High School, Southside, Alabama. He is 14 years old.
