From the Eyes of an Auschwitz Jew

Brandy Hendley, Age 14
Pat Neff Middle School
San Antonio, TX

Brandy is in the eighth grade. Her English teacher is Lynnette Perez.

I recall being dragged and shoved into a train,
Carried away from family and friends,
To a place I call Nightmareland.
Put in small rooms with too many people,
Nothing but disease and starvation surrounded me.
Working all day and seeing them die,
Would haunt me forever, if I only knew why.
Seeing new prisoners being torn away screaming,
My heart would ache for them if only it could.
So sorry I can't, but so happy am I
That now that I'm free I can be my own man.
They said my smell repelled them
So much that I needed a shower
And to follow them.
With so many people naked, bare,
We all started coughing and
Losing our air.
Now it is over. I'm happier,
Now than I ever was.
To look over my people
from high in the clouds.
