Ontario and Canadian residents must have an Outdoors Card (Angling version) to purchase a fishing license.

You do not need an Ontario Resident Sport Fishing License if you are under 18 or over 64 years old. You may also fish without a license if you are a disabled person. A disabled person under these regulations is someone who has qualified for and is in possession of either a CNIB National Identity card or a Ministry of Transportation disabled person parking permit or a photocopy (i.e. individuals carrying a photocopy of the permit may be required to show the original permit at a later date). People who will fall into one of the above categories are considered to be license holders. They have all the same rights and responsibilities, including limits on fish, as people who have purchased licensed and tags.

Canadian Residents (Outside of Ontario)

You are considered a Canadian Resident if you have lived in any part of Canada for at least seven consecutive months in the 12 months before you obtain your license. Canadian residents may purchase either a Resident Seasonal License or a Resident Conservation License and will have all the rights and responsibilities as Ontario residents, except the disability exemptions do not apply.

Non-Resident (Persons Living outside of Canada)

Anyone who is not an Ontario resident or Canadian resident under the above rules is considered a non-resident and must purchase a Non-Resident Sport Fishing License. Non-residents do not need an Outdoors Card to purchase fishing licenses. Non-residents under 18 may angle without a license if accompanied by a licensed family member. Any fish caught will legally be part of the catch and possession limit of the person who holds the license.

Conservation Licenses

Residents and non-residents are able to buy "Conservation Licenses" which promote conservation principles. These licenses are on half the cost of "Regular" licenses and involve lower catch and possession limits. Full details of the conditions of holding such licenses are available in the 1993 Summary of Ontario Fishing Regulations and from MNR District offices.

Please remember to carry your license at all times. If an officer asks to see your license, the law requires you to show it.
